There is evidence that the body’s protective enzymes break down the implant’s silicone envelope: then immune-system cells called macrophages engulf the silicone particles. The macrophages carry toxic silicone throughout the body, and in response the body releases immune chemicals called cytokines. These include interferon and tumor necrosis factor, which could be responsible for causing the flulike symptoms and other inflammatory symptoms, such as muscle pain and joint pain, suffered by some women with implants.
